Press On Nais: errori comuni da evitare

Common mistakes to avoid when applying press-ons for the first time

Applying press-ons is simple, but as with any new habit there are small details that make the difference between a manicure that lasts and one that comes off after a few hours. Here are the most frequent mistakes first-timers make — and how to avoid them from the start.

1. Skipping the natural nail prep

It's the most common mistake and the one with the biggest impact on hold. Applying a press-on to a nail with traces of cream, oil or sebum compromises adhesion from the outset, whichever method you choose.

How to avoid it: always clean the nail with an alcohol-soaked pad and lightly buff the surface with a buffer before going any further. It takes two minutes and makes all the difference.

2. Choosing the size “by eye”

Picking a tip without checking that it covers the nail bed exactly, perhaps just choosing the one that looks “about right”, almost always leads to an imperfect fit: pressure on the sides if it's too narrow, gaps if it's too wide.

How to avoid it: try the tip directly on your nail before applying it for good, going up or down a size until it covers perfectly from one side edge to the other. It's worth spending a few extra minutes on this step before you begin.

3. Applying the press-on flat instead of at an angle

Placing the tip perpendicular to the nail, straight down from above, encourages air bubbles to form under the surface and reduces adhesion.

How to avoid it: always apply the press-on at an angle of about 45° to the natural nail, starting from the base near the cuticle and “rolling” it down towards the tip. This movement pushes the air out instead of trapping it.

4. Using too much (or too little) glue

Too much glue can seep out from the edges and come into contact with the skin or cuticles; too little, on the other hand, won't give a solid bond, especially at the sides.

How to avoid it: apply a thin, even layer, without excess, spreading it with a wooden stick if necessary. If any seeps out, remove the excess straight away before it dries.

5. Not pressing for long enough after application

Many people position the press-on and let go almost immediately, without giving the glue time to grip.

How to avoid it: press firmly for at least 20-30 seconds, from the base towards the tip, before moving on to the next finger.

6. Exposing your hands to water or heat straight away

Taking a shower, washing up in hot water or exposing your hands to heat sources in the first few hours after application can weaken the still-fresh bond.

How to avoid it: give the glue at least an hour to “settle” before exposing your hands to water, steam or direct heat.

7. Filing too aggressively to adjust the shape

If a tip is slightly wider than your nail, filing it down too much to make it fit can alter its original shape and weaken its edges.

How to avoid it: file gently and only as much as needed to adjust the tip, or, if the difference is obvious, choose the closest size instead of over-correcting it.

8. Forcing removal at the end of the day

Pulling off the press-on with your fingers or without the proper tools, perhaps in a hurry, is the most common cause of stress and flaking to the natural nail.

How to avoid it: always use the dedicated remover and a cuticle pusher to gently lift the edges, giving the glue time to lose its grip before removing the set.

In short

Almost all first-application mistakes come from rushing: skipping the prep, choosing the size without checking it, or not giving the glue the time it needs to grip. A few extra minutes at each step are all it takes to get a manicure that really lasts, right from the first attempt.
